This work was finished in 1935 and exhibited in July 1935. Magritte describes this work as follows: "Collective Invention is the answer to the problem of the sea. On the beach I laid a siren, the top part of whose body is that of a fish, while the bottom part consists of the belly and legs of a woman.".  

Every figurine is painted by hand and all are delivered with a picture of the original work and a biography of the artist.

This workshop was originally specialized in restoration of religious paintings and sculptures. After the delicate work of restoring Artworks, these craftsmen with their unique skills decided to go further, still bringing life to paintings but this time by lifting images out of the flat surface.
