The identified model is a young dancer in ballet class at the Paris Opera, named Marie van Goethem. Auguste Renoir described the sculpture (the original wax) as a particularly innovative attempt at realism, especially since she is dressed in real fabric accessories and a hair wig!

Along with Monet, Degas is the father of Impressionism in France, famous for the innovative composition of his paintings and later for his sculptures.

This statuette is hand-painted and comes with a photo of the original work and a biography of the artist, Edgar Degas.
