Originally it is based on the figures Paolo and Francesca from Dante's Inferno, who were convicted to Hell for eternity because they kissed each other after Francescahad married Paolo's brother. In between Romanticism and Impressionism this self-willed Frenchman created some of the most famous pieces known in the art of sculpting.
